The News

Coinbase Got Breached. Coinbase Says It Didn't.

Amplitude, a third party analytics vendor, got hacked and exposed contact information for more than 70,000 Coinbase users. Coinbase's official statement opened with "Coinbase has not had a data breach," then explained in the next sentence that its vendor had one anyway. No funds touched, no wallets accessed, just names and contact details out in the wild.

This is the fifth security incident to hit Bitcoin infrastructure in three months, after the Cold Card exploit, the Ledger supply chain attack, a Foundation Digital phishing campaign, and the Keystone key failure that forced the destruction of 18,000 hardware wallets. Blockstream put out its own phishing warning the same morning. And Coinbase has used this exact defense before: in May 2025, attackers bribed overseas support staff for customer data, and Coinbase rejected a $20 million extortion demand tied to it.

The breach isn't the real story. The real story is that the largest US Bitcoin exchange keeps describing leaks of its own customers' data as somebody else's problem, right as new users are told Coinbase is where you go to be safe.

When you're the biggest name in the room, "it wasn't technically us" stops being a defense and becomes the whole pattern.

A Decade of Calling Bitcoin Dead, Now With an AI Excuse

Jason Calacanis, co-host of the All-In podcast, told his 1.9 million followers this week to sell their Bitcoin for AI. His case: ETF outflows will keep draining, Bitcoin retests $57,000 within 12 months, and it never breaks its all-time high again. His replacement trade is "super intelligence," which he says offers unlimited upside while Bitcoin offers nothing beyond store of value.

Calacanis has been calling this top since 2015, with a running list that includes Bitcoin going to zero, to $3,700, to $500, and getting replaced by "a better technology." None of it happened. He's also previously said Bitcoin has demonstrated real resilience, so the latest call is a reversal of his own more measured take from just last year.

Michael Saylor's response cut straight to it: AI creates abundance, Bitcoin enforces scarcity, and the two are complementary rather than competing bets. The timing is the real tell here. Calacanis is telling people to rotate out of Bitcoin and into AI stocks at the exact moment plenty of people are starting to wonder if AI is the one that's overbought.

Selling Bitcoin to buy the top of the AI trade isn't a thesis. It's a decade of being wrong, with a new coat of paint.

Bitcoin's Jargon Problem, According to the People Who Built It

The best conversation at Bitcoin Lugano this week didn't happen on the main stage. In a small workshop, creator Max Demarco argued that terms like self-custody and hardware wallet, the vocabulary that got early Bitcoiners in, is now the exact thing keeping normal people out. His fix isn't watering down the message, it's translating it: swap self-custody for "money in your own pocket" and the idea survives contact with someone who's never heard of a seed phrase.

Simply Bitcoin president Mike Germano took the idea further, floating actual focus groups to market Bitcoin's message without losing its substance. Host Coinjoin Chris added the harder part out loud: two years of treating newcomers as the enemy for not understanding every piece of in-group jargon probably cost Bitcoin more converts than this bear market did.

The product isn't the problem. The pitch is.
