The News

North Korea Pulls Off the Biggest Heist in Human History

On October 29, attackers compromised a Binance engineer's laptop and used it to drain wallets across ten blockchains. Binance put the total impact at around $6.3 billion, the largest crypto theft ever recorded, bigger than last year's $1.5 billion Bybit hack and the Iraqi Central Bank heist of 2003 combined many times over.

Multiple blockchain intelligence firms, including TRM Labs and Chainalysis, attributed the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor, the North Korean unit tied to the Lazarus Group. The laundering pattern (small Tornado Cash withdrawals, funds staged days in advance, one fast sweep) matched the Bybit job almost exactly.

Bitcoin dipped on the news but held around $77,000. The hosts read that as the real story: the single biggest hack in human history hit the tape and barely moved the price.

Binance got robbed blind. Bitcoin shrugged.

The Hack That Proved the Bitcoiners Right About Stablecoins

Tether and Circle froze roughly $3 billion in stolen stablecoins within hours, working with Binance and law enforcement to choke off the attacker's exit. It worked. It also proved the point.

Stablecoins run on rails with an admin key. Someone can freeze them on command, which is exactly what just happened and exactly why Bitcoiners have never treated stablecoins as the same asset as Bitcoin. Bitcoin's ledger has no freeze button, for the hacker or for you.

Centralization bailed out the victims this time. It will not always be your money they decide to save.

Binance's Second Billion Dollar Disaster in a Year, and the Dollar's Strange Win

Fund manager Frank Holmes pointed out this is Binance's second catastrophe inside twelve months. He pegged last October's algo driven liquidation event, the one Binance blamed on Trump's China tariff comments, at $19 billion in wiped out positions. Different excuse, same exchange, one year apart almost to the day.

His bigger point: Tether has become one of the largest buyers of US government debt, meaning Bitcoin's own offspring is quietly propping up the dollar's global reach even as Bitcoiners bet on that same dollar losing ground long term. Bitcoin created the thing eating into its own bear case.

There Is No Such Thing as Zero Counterparty

Adam O'Brien joined to lay out what he calls the counterparty ladder: a ranking of where your Bitcoin exposure actually sits, from ETFs and custodial exchanges at the bottom, up through retirement accounts, collaborative custody, self-custody, and KYC free self-custody at the top.

His point landed harder given the timing. A custodial exchange like Binance gives you the feeling of owning Bitcoin with none of the upside of actually holding it. No title to the coins, no insurance, all of it sitting in one address a handful of executives control. That, he said, is the most dangerous rung on the ladder, not the top or the bottom.

Every rung has a tradeoff. Know which one you're standing on.
